DECIDE ON YOUR MARKET NICHE (WHAT YOUR CHANNEL IS ABOUT)
A niche simply means your core specialty or what you are or will be known for.
Most people rush into starting a YouTube channel without first thoroughly thinking of what their channel will specifically be about. This is where you will either become successful or a failure.
You need to clearly define which market niche you want to target and stick by it. This is very important and cannot be overemphasized. This will be the purpose of your channel.
Why is choosing a niche important?
Let us start with the picture below describing PRECISION vs ACCURACY.
A is not accurate but precise
B is not accurate neither is it precise
C is accurate but not precise
D is accurate and precise
Your niche is the foundation of a YouTube business online. To feed the right video content to the right audience, you must first determine who your audience is.
If you decide to produce Random content videos without definition,
you will always lie in the A, B, or C categories (contents of different niches with no one being specific about a particular 0r specific niche – your core)
It is quite unethical and a waste of time if you talk about the cooking niche, for instance in your channel, and the next video you publish on the same channel talks about the health niche. You have to be specific. Your channel should have a purpose and an intent.
It is very ethical to be known for a particular niche. If your niche is cooking, for instance, then the videos you produce in that channel should all be related to cooking.
Define your purpose and choose a definite niche for your channel. This will be like hitting the right target many times over.
THIS WILL BE PRECISE AND ACCURATE. The audience will know that they will get exactly what they need once they get to your youtube channel as you have created content around a specific niche.
Choosing a niche
As discussed previously, the importance of a niche.
Most people tend to pick a niche as a result of consideration for only one factor…(what they usually do or like doing). For instance, a barber would probably want to have a channel about barbing the hair or a photographer would like to have a channel showcasing his or her photography skills. This will be a great start but let’s dive deeper as we give you some more tips in considering or deciding on your niche but consider this powerful tip: your channel is not about what you want to do but about what people need answers from you for.
Diving deep as to choosing a niche
Solve a problem – this is the leader of the pack for me because every other topic in this section revolves around this.
To grow fast and make a lot of money on YouTube, you need to be a problem solver. Hey…, not a mathematical or physics problem, but being a solution provider to a situation that needs an answer. For instance, a video on HOW TO KNOT A TIE…
will be a great solution to probably someone who is going for an interview for the first time and has never knot a tie in his life. With this, you will help that viewer out by giving them step by step what he needs and you will eventually build a massive loyal following over time. If you put this in mind when choosing a niche, you will be surprised at how much, people need these answers that you are providing.
Your passion for a particular Niche plays a big role in boosting your role in solving a problem in (a) above.
Having a passion for a particular topic or niche will do the following for you:
You won’t get bored easily on producing content or answers for your audience through your YouTube channel.
Because you have a passion for your niche, you will provide passionate and genuine answers and/or content.
Other people will be interested in what you have to talk about because you will attract other people’s interest since you are passionate about what you are speaking of.
You’ll never be tired of producing content because this is a passion that you love doing, just like a real sportsman would never get tired of his sporting activities even if they were not paid for it. (Leo Messi once said this. NOT EXACTLY… “I will still play football even if I wasn’t paid to do it). There will be times when it’ll be highly difficult to continue producing content for your YouTube channel because you have, probably, run out of ideas. Your passion will be the one to keep you afloat.
(c.) interest – You have to determine from the start if there is interest, from the audience, in the niche you are about to produce contents on.
How would you know this?
Lucky you…there are free tools to use. Thanks to how the search engines work as most of these tools, if not all, take their results from the information that is already available from the same audience searches. Only that some give in-depth information than others.
As a beginner, you can start with tools like google trends, ubersuggest, keywords everywhere, vidIQ, tube buddy, ahrefs, (link all) to mention but a few.
Let’s check out, how some of these tools work.
Let’s consider the dog niche…as an example
Google Trends will show you the strength of the topic(s), you search for, over time.
It takes into consideration whether the topic searched for is still in an uptrend (alive) or a downtrend (dying) with the graph it displays.
(d.) check the level of rivalry
At this stage, you need to check how competitive this niche you are thinking of is. YOU wouldn’t want to be involved in a niche that the rivalry is so high. This will mean you have started killing yourself right from the beginning. There is a tussle from the beginning.
As an example, imagine two niches (A and B). Niche A has 50 active YouTubers and niche B has only 10 active YouTubers and both, say from google trends research, show that both niches are in an uptrend with a very high rate monthly searches. Even though you think you have a higher passion for niche A than for niche B, I would advise you pitch your tent at niche B because the rivalry here is far less than that in A. this will give you more audience in a short while and in turn your created youtube channel will earn money online faster even as a beginner.
But on the other hand, if you have already started a YouTube channel or you just want to be in, for instance, Niche A, spoken of above, then, you will need to focus more on targeting keywords that are less competitive and yet in high demand. Gradually, you can build up your audience with this.
A good place that you can learn keywords is from GREG KRONONENKO THE CAFFEINATED BLOGGER. He goes in-depth.
But if you have not started and you don’t have a certain niche in mind yet, then you have a better chance of choosing a niche with high demand and less rivalry.
When you finally decide on your niche, putting into consideration the above tips, to have an additional edge over other similar YouTubers in your niche then consider subscribing to their channels so you can be involved in their comment section to check out what viewers are liking or demanding for and what they dislike. This will help you create better videos than the existing ones.
You have to take note of the errors in your rival’s channels and capitalize on that to make a better version for your channel. By the time you do this, the audience will prefer you better, and naturally, you will begin to gather the audience because they know that your presentation comes more uniquely.
Distinctly enter your niche and stand out from the crowd.
There are thousands of niches out there to explore from. Some are known and some unknown. Be creative about it and use the tips above to pick a niche for yourself.
Some of the most common saturated and profitable niches are:
Dogs, make money online, SEO, video games, reviews, sports, meditation, how to…, home remedies, health, fashion, beauty, food, comedy, celebrity life, news, etc.
If you are considering any of these, please use the tips given above and let your summary be HIGH DEMAND AND LITTLE COMPETITION.
Your keywords will work great here.
If you are still confused, in how to streamline your niche and get the perfect one for you, I learned the technique from GREG KRONONENKO the caffeinated blogger
CREATING/ STARTING/ SETTING UP YOUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL
First things first, you should treat this as a business because your YouTube channel is your business online that will earn you money. Your channel speaks a lot about you. So everything you do in setting up or creating this channel should be done with caution and precision because this is what will be seen by the audience.
How do I start/ create a YouTube account?
Every Gmail account has a YouTube channel attached to that account. So for you to be able to access a YouTube channel, you must have a Gmail account first as this would be your automatic ticket into YouTube. By the way, it is free to create one. You can SIGN UP HERE if you don’t have one already.
After you have created your g mail account, you need to head over to www.youtube.com and “sign-in” at the upper right-hand corner with your new or existing Gmail account and password
After which it will allow you into your YouTube channel with your unique identity i.e. your Gmail name and password. You should have the initial of your name displayed after you sign in.
Click on the initial (that’s your profile icon) and scroll down to the “settings” icon. A new page will open up (like the one shown below) then locate the “create a new channel”
Click on this link. Next, you’ll have the option to create a channel using a business or personal name.
For this example, let us choose the personal name option.
Give your channel a name and select a category that your channel belongs to and fill every other necessary detail required. It is self-explanatory.
Remember, you must have decided on your niche by now which is also the same as category (fill it)
After your channel is created, navigate to the “about” section and fill it.
Fill out your profile and channel description. This is where you describe your brand and what viewers can expect to see on your channel. This section defines you this is also a very good place to add links attached to your website and other social media networks that you have. This description will appear in more than one place on your channel, so be sure to put your best foot forward when filling it out!
Create a good channel art and logo – a channel art is the first thing your viewers see when they visit your channel while the logo is your symbol. Liken it to the home page of a website. What do your viewers see first?
This is a banner that displays your channel name and other information you want to be shared. It is your cover photo and it introduces your brand. So, it’s great to take your time to design something out.
Consider using these free drag and drop tools SNAPPA or CANVA to create/ design something great even if you don’t have the skills of a graphic designer.
You can make your cover photo as extravagant or moderate as you’d like, but just know that it is your brand, and it is going to be the first impression someone gets upon getting to your channel. YouTube recommendation size for this channel art is 2560 x 1440 pixels and the file size should not be more than 4MB.
6. Optimize your channel description so it can be found easily
A good method in doing this is to include relevant keywords that your channel is based on, naturally, in the description space provided by Youtube. Within the opening lines of your description.
This description is like a brief written introduction about what is to be expected of your channel so that when a viewer visits, he knows at once if he is in the right place or not.
Mind you, this description space is limited to a maximum of 1,000 characters only. So you have to be very creative about what to write with your channel keywords included in the description naturally.
A simple method to do this is to type in your keyword in the YouTube search bar and automatically, keywords that people are searching for will be generated.
Grab some or all these keywords and form a sentence or sentences to describe your channel.
Going back to our initial keyword phrase “HOW TO KNOT A TIE”…you can see the different automatic search results that showed:
How to knot a tie
How to knot a tie easy way
How to knot a tie in 10 seconds
How to knot a tie for beginners
How to knot a tie perfectly
How to knot a tie easily
Take note of the emboldened words. These are the needed keywords to form a sentence.
So you can have a channel description like:
“In this channel, we give tips on how to knot a tie the easy way in 10 seconds even if you are a beginner. Subscribe to learn more.”
Nothing too serious. You get what I mean. You can do better with more keywords. Let it flow naturally.
Further keyword research would be to check the monthly search results of the emboldened, to determine and/or decide which of the keywords has the highest search results (don’t forget the free tools mentioned initially) which will be the perfect ones for use.
UPLOAD A TRAILER VIDEO – after you have created a channel art and logo for your YouTube channel, the next thing to do is to create a trailer for your channel. Most people don’t do this but the essence or benefit is that people get to see what is to be expected in your channel first hand before they dive into it.
Trailers for YouTube channels are usually very short but they should be engaging as this is part of what determines your quick subscribers base. Let it serve as a good introduction for new visitors.
With a trailer, your visitors can know who you are, what your business is all about, and what kind of stuff they should be expecting in the future.
Trailers appear only to people who are not subscribed to your channel yet.
8. Add your contact (Email address)
Since you are starting/ creating this YouTube channel to earn money online, you surely want to monetize your YouTube channel, you should treat it as a business and every business must have contact because anyone can be interested in your work or content and would want to contact you for business. YouTube has a section for you to put your contact details for business inquiries.
Click the channel logo or icon at the upper left-hand side
Click on customize channel
Then head on to the about section from there scroll down to “Details.” Here you’ll see the option to share your email address:
CREATE AND UPLOAD YOUR FIRST VIDEO
Yup….you’ve done the majors in your channel …you have started the optimization right from the start of the channel because you have created a great channel art as shown, you also have been able to create a fantastic channel logo from the lessons you learned for free on skillshare and/or udemy with the use of free tools like CANVA and SNAPPA you’ve also described what your channel is about using relevant keywords, etc…it’s now time to upload your first content/video.
Your content/videos are the engines of your YouTube channel, they are the determinant of how your channel will perform. Therefore, you want to make sure that you are consistently producing quality and solution-oriented videos for your channel.
If you are in the comedy niche then produce funny videos as millions of audiences need to laugh… (That’s the answer to their problem. Same for all other niches). Just give a solution.
Skillshare and udemy have free lessons on video editing and production. Take out time to learn a few things and skills. There is no rush to remember that the major aim is to produce content that is a solution first to the audience than with time, you will start earning money online, gradually, with your new YouTube channel even as a beginner.
The best way to be wealthy is to be a solution provider and people will want to pay to have a solution.
Finally, check out what your rivals’ videos look like so you can improve on what is already available that is working for them. You can know through the views and followers that they get from such videos.
Uploading your first video
There are a few tricks that should be considered when uploading your video(s) on YouTube.
When you complete your video, save the video in the name of the title of that video e.g. if you are producing a video on “how to knot a tie quickly in 10 seconds” then all you need to do is save the video before upload in the same name. The reason for this is simple. The YouTube algorithm wouldn’t get confused about what the video is about. So many people do not know this but this works against your video if it is saved in another name different from the video topic… as simple as it is, it is powerful.
Note that your first few videos might not be as perfect as expected, do not be bothered. Just keep producing because the more videos you produce the better you will gradually become i.e. be consistent in creating content for your YouTube channel if you want to earn money because you never know which of them will blow up. And that one video that blows up will affect the others positively.
Steps in uploading your first video
From your YouTube channel, click on the video sign having the plus in it located at the upper right-hand side
When a new window opens, select your file from your computer and upload your video (remember, the video should be saved in the title of that video)
Immediately, another window would open where you are to fill the necessary information
The title of the video (keyword researched)
The description of the video
This will be done exactly the way you previously optimized the channel description. The only difference now would be that the optimization will be based on keywords from the video topic now and not channel topic.
Upload a thumbnail.
A thumbnail is the cover page of your video. This tells the audience at a glance what to expect in the video.
You can create one from canva or snappa even as a beginner.
Find some thumbnail examples below on “how to knot a tie”:
Create a playlist for your first video
Depending on what it is about create a playlist for the video so you can have all similar videos like it in the same playlist.
As indicated, when creating the playlist, it helps viewers discover your content easily.
Select which audience your video is for whether…Yes, it’s made for kids. Or No, it’s not made for kids
Scroll down and click on the “more options” to the paid promotion question
Next is the tags. This is not so important but something, besides, is better than nothing. The impact of tags doesn’t add so much to the optimization per se.
From your keyword research…paste your researched keywords in the tags section. Free tools like tube buddy and vidIQ are very useful here. They can help you filter the results i.e. which is the best for you to use as tags.
Keywords everywhere is also a useful tool here.
Click on the Next button and fill in the rest as it is self-explanatory.
